Overview

I partnered with stakeholders across product, engineering, and business to reimagine how users navigate the Walmart Business account experience. This work laid the foundation for a scalable platform to support larger organizations in the future.

Challenge 🎯

In 2022, Walmart Business launched as a procurement solution for small businesses and nonprofits.

The account experience at the time was built on top of Walmart’s consumer platform, designed for individuals.

While the account experience held up well in supporting small businesses cracks were starting to emerge as the product started to support larger organizations.

Problem 🤕

The Walmart Business account experience was not designed for organizations. As a result, its existing structure does not scale effectively as we integrate more experiences for organizations.

Discovery 🔎

I kicked off research with an affinity mapping workshop with stakeholders across product, engineering, and business. We documented problems around navigation and brainstormed solutions.

The team identified 3 themes around the account structure.

Affinity mapping with stakeholders.

  1. It is unclear what is personal vs organization information.

  1. As more business settings are introduced, the space is becoming cluttered.

Solution ✅

After exploring multiple concepts, I designed a new account experience called “My organization”.

“My organization” separates organization info from “My account” and houses it in a dedicated space.

My organization as a space peer to My account.

My organization as a space peer to My account.

“My organization” is a single customizable place for all business settings, providing clarity between personal and organization information.

A dedicated space for all business information.

A user can navigate to “My organization” through a banner on “My account” or by opening the account dropdown in the header.

Navigating to “My organization”.

Upon first visit to “My organization”, there will be an introduction modal to explain the new experience.

Dismissing the modal reveals the user’s organization dashboard and left navigation.

“My organization” introduction and dashboard.

The dashboard contains helpful widgets about the organization and is customizable to let users tailor their views and focus on what matters most to them, empowering smarter decisions at the leadership level.

A customizable dashboard let’s users surface the most relevant data for their role.

Imagery and relevant information like user role, organization name, user / group count helps the user identify herself in the space.

Small win with relevant imagery and information to help clarify the spaces.

Impact 📉

The work was presented to leadership and received a warm reception. It was clear that the account experience needed a scalable solution as the product began supporting larger organizations with more complex needs.

This was my final project at Walmart Business, and it helped lay the foundation for the team to move forward with testing and development.
